Hints & Tips
We appreciate you might never have used self storage before so we’ve asked our experts to compile a list of useful hints and tips to enable you to make the most of your storage…
- TIP 1
Make a list of what you intend to store, especially of the larger or more unusual shaped items. Note items that can fold down or be taken apart to make more space i.e. beds. Remember that you can stack your sofa on its end if it is strong enough. This will help you get the best possible quote and enough packing materials.
- TIP 2
Label all boxes clearly to help when retrieving goods from your unit and unpacking.
- TIP 3
Use chests of drawers and wardrobes to store boxes and paper work giving you extra room. Position items that you will need frequent access to at the front of the unit.
- TIP 4
Store heavy items in smaller boxes to make for easy lifting. Store china and breakables in stronger cardboard or plastic boxes packing them using bubble wrap or tissue paper.
- TIP 5
Calculate the value of what you have to store and arrange insurance cover. This can be done in store and must be taken out prior to moving your goods in.
- TIP 6
Allow large and heavy items to form the base of the storage room with lighter items at the top.
- TIP 7
Cover all furniture with dust covers and remember to wrap table and chair legs in bubble wrap to avoid scratching.
- TIP 8
Make sure that fridges and freezers are fully defrosted to prevent water damage and where possible leave the doors open to allow ventilation.
- TIP 9
Clean all garden furniture before storing and make sure that your lawnmower is drained of petrol and oil. Gas cylinders for Barbeques must not be stored along with paints, varnishes, thinners or chemicals.
- TIP 10
Purchase a padlock to secure your unit (available at reception). If there will be more than one person accessing the unit (we will need notification of this on your Storage Licence) consider a combination padlock.
- TIP 11
Food cannot be put into storage unless it is tinned and placed in a secure container
