Tips for Using Self-Storage

If you are new to self-storage and are unsure where to start, do not fear! We have spoken to our experts and have compiled a list of useful hints and tips to help you make the most of your storage space.

  • Make a list of what you intend to store, especially of the larger items that can fold down or be taken apart. You can also stack your sofa on its end to make more space.
  • Choosing the right boxes can help to keep your items secure. Second-hand ones should be fully inspected to check for any damage that can make your boxes weaker and cause damage to your belongings.
  • Label all boxes clearly to help when retrieving goods from your unit and unpacking. If you label your boxes as you pack and make a list of where everything is located, it will save you time and reduce stress when it comes to finding what you need.
  • Use chests of drawers and wardrobes to store boxes and items inside to maximise your storage space and provide extra flexibility.
  • Position items that you will need frequent access to at the front of the unit. If you’re putting items into storage for a while, there may be some things you need sooner than others. Store items you may need more frequently at the front of your storage unit for easy access.
  • Store heavy items in smaller boxes to make for easy lifting and mark anything particularly heavy when packed, so that it’s not a surprise when lifting later.
  • Store larger and heavy items at the base of the storage room with lighter items at the top. Place your heaviest and most bulky items against the walls and at the back of the unit to maximise space.
  • Don't overload or underload storage boxes. Stuffing boxes full of too many items can make the box dangerous to lift and more liable to damage your items. Under filling boxes also causes issues, as boxes can move around in transportation and be easily crushed.
  • Even though your storage unit is cleaned beforehand, it is a good idea to purchase dust sheets to protect your belongings and wrap table and chair legs in bubble wrap to avoid scratching.
  • Fully defrost fridges and freezers completely to prevent water damage and leave the door slightly ajar to prevent odours.
  • Clean all garden furniture before storing and make sure that your lawnmower is drained of petrol and oil. Make sure gas cylinders for barbeques are not stored near paints, varnishes, thinners or chemicals.
